XRPScan, a well-known XRP Ledger Explorer, recently alerted the XRP community about a potential threat. The warning addressed claims about an XRP account allegedly linked to the U.S. Treasury. In a tweet, XRPScan clarified: “A statement on the widely shared XRP account purporting to be a U.S. government-affiliated account. We request the community to do their own due diligence before trusting, buying, or selling tokens on the public ledger.” This reminder emphasized the importance of personal verification in blockchain transactions.
Misleading Information on Public Blockchains
XRPScan explained that anyone can create an account on the XRP Ledger (XRPL) and modify fields as they please. Blockchain explorers like XRPScan serve as neutral tools, only censoring information under specific circumstances. To address the situation, XRPScan flagged the suspicious account as spam.

Speculations about the U.S. Treasury’s involvement in the XRPL gained traction on social media, particularly on X (formerly Twitter). This prompted discussions among XRP enthusiasts, drawing responses from notable figures like XRPL developer Wietse Wind and Ripple CTO David Schwartz.
Wind clarified that public fields on blockchain accounts can be edited by anyone. Token issuance and Know Your Customer (KYC) processes do not guarantee affiliations. “Successful KYC doesn’t confirm someone is affiliated with an organization,” Wind noted. He urged users to verify claims instead of trusting them blindly.
How to Verify Domain Ownership
David Schwartz highlighted how users can confirm a connection between an account and its claimed domain. He explained that only account owners can set the “Domain” field, while only domain owners can set a TOML file.

When these match, the connection becomes verifiable. Moreover, Schwartz demonstrated methods to ensure an account’s authenticity. The incident highlights the importance of skepticism in the blockchain space.
Users should exercise caution, verify information independently, and avoid assumptions based on unverified data.
