The XRP Ledger (XRPL) is currently undergoing significant developments, with the introduction of a native lending protocol. This protocol is poised to enhance the financial market capabilities of the blockchain, offering users opportunities for lending and borrowing assets directly within the XRPL ecosystem.
Spotlight on XRPL’s Evolution
Panos Mekras, co-founder of Anodos Finance, recently drew attention to the ongoing development within the XRPL community. He referenced a presentation by Luc Bocahut, Product Director and Solutions Architect at XRPL Commons, highlighting the history and continual advancements of the XRP Ledger since its inception in 2012.
BREAKING: A native lending protocol seems to be in development for the XRPL. Increasing DeFi functionality on XRPL seems to be the main focus and I'm here for it.

Bocahut emphasized various enhancements to the XRPL, including the support for non-fungible tokens (NFTs) introduced in September 2022 through the XLS-20 amendment. Additionally, he highlighted existing features such as the native decentralized exchange (DEX), token asset control, advanced payment options, and the recent integration of NFTs.

Introduction of DeFi Lending on XRPL
During the presentation, Bocahut unveiled plans for a lend/borrow protocol currently developing for the XRPL. This protocol aims to enable users to lend their tokens for yield generation or borrow assets directly within the XRPL ecosystem, mirroring the decentralized finance (DeFi) lending model.
Unlike traditional DeFi platforms that rely on smart contracts, the XRPL’s lending protocol will operate without smart contract functionality. According to Ripple’s CTO David Schwartz, this approach circumvents the need to wait for the implementation of smart contracts on the network, which has faced delays due to perceived risks.
Bolstering DeFi Functionality on XRPL
The introduction of a DeFi lending protocol aligns with efforts to enhance DeFi functionality on the XRP Ledger. With the existing native DEX and the upcoming automated market maker (AMM) feature, the XRPL is positioning itself as a comprehensive ecosystem for decentralized financial activities.
The XRPL’s evolution is driven by various builders within the blockchain ecosystem, including XRPL Labs and Ripple. Once a development is proposed, it undergoes community discussion before being put to a vote as an amendment. Amendments require 80% validator consensus for two weeks before implementation.
