Unauthorized Use of Shiba Inu Logo: Designer Threatens Legal Action

Over 600 Million SHIB Tokens Burned as Shibarium Acquires New Milestone

Sveinn Valdimarsson, the designer behind the iconic Shiba Inu logo, has voiced his discontent over the commercialization of his creation. He has suggested the possibility of taking legal action against the Shiba Inu team to prevent them from monetizing the logo he designed.

In an interview with DL News on Monday, the 25-year-old designer clarified that he does not mind individuals using the logo as tattoos on their bodies or printing it on personal items like t-shirts or cars. However, he strongly opposes its use by businesses for commercial purposes.

Valdimarsson said, “You can get a tattoo, put it on your t-shirt or car, and everything is fine.” However, he firmly opposes businesses’ use of the logo to create products like “Shiba cigarettes” and profit from it. He emphasizes the importance of honesty and expects the Shiba Inu team to discourage such commercial usage.

Valdimarsson has initiated contacting the Shiba Inu team, urging them to refrain from encouraging business enterprises to utilize the SHIB logo. While he has not ruled out the possibility of pursuing legal action, the logo designer aims to find a resolution that respects his intellectual property rights. He believes that the project’s current approach blurs the boundaries between decentralization and commercialization, prompting him to seek a balance.

The Shiba Inu logo came into existence after the cryptocurrency was launched in August 2020. Valdimarsson, the designer, initially created the logo prototype without any cost, and the community later chose it through voting as the current logo. No trademarks or agreements were established regarding its future usage at the time of adoption.

Frederic Rocafort, an intellectual property lawyer from the law firm Harris Bricken, stated in an interview with DL News that Valdimarsson holds legal rights in most jurisdictions. Rocafort explained that even if artists do not register their work, a legal doctrine grants them ownership rights over their creations.

The lawyer drew a comparison between using someone’s logo and purchasing a house. He emphasized that if the seller is not the rightful owner, they cannot legally sell the house, regardless of their claims or beliefs about ownership. In such cases, the transaction becomes null and void, as the house ultimately belongs to someone else.
