Ripple CEO: Bitcoin and XRP Communities Are Closer Than They Think

Ripple, the San Francisco-based blockchain firm, made headlines at the 2025 Bitcoin Conference in Las Vegas by offering a symbolic peace gesture. The company donated the controversial ‘Skull of Satoshi’ to the Bitcoin community. The Bitcoin Conference’s official X account confirmed the donation, announcing that the skull will now reside permanently in the Bitcoin Museum in Nashville.

From Criticism to Tribute

Previously used to criticize Bitcoin’s high energy consumption due to its proof-of-work consensus mechanism, the Skull of Satoshi has long symbolized environmental concerns around Bitcoin mining. However, Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse changed the narrative surrounding the symbol.

Taking to X, Garlinghouse explained that the skull now represents Bitcoin’s “incredible staying power,” a trait admired by many across the crypto landscape, including himself. In his post, Garlinghouse emphasized the need for unity across the cryptocurrency sector.

He argued that communities, especially Bitcoin and XRP share more in common than they acknowledge. Instead of clashing over differing views, Garlinghouse encouraged stakeholders to work together on shared goals such as regulatory clarity, financial inclusion, and innovation.

Ongoing Tensions Between Bitcoin and XRP Camps

Despite their mutual interest in advancing blockchain technology, the Bitcoin and XRP communities have often found themselves at odds. In January, tensions escalated during a heated debate over the proposed Strategic Bitcoin Reserve (SBR) in the U.S. Pierre Rochard, VP of Research at Riots Platform, accused Ripple of lobbying against the SBR initiative.

He also blamed the company for opposing Bitcoin mining under the Biden administration. Garlinghouse, however, denied these claims and clarified that Ripple supports a multi-asset reserve model rather than favoring any single cryptocurrency.

Although hostilities between the two communities have eased in recent months, Ripple’s donation of the Skull of Satoshi stands as a public call for reconciliation.
