Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse emphasized during his appearance on 60 Minutes that the cryptocurrency industry is not seeking deregulation but instead asking for proper regulation. According to Garlinghouse, the request has consistently been for “clear rules of the road” rather than a lack of oversight.
During the interview, the FIT 21 bill, designed to establish a regulatory framework for digital assets, was highlighted. The bill had been approved by the US House of Representatives earlier in May, showcasing legislative efforts to address the evolving crypto landscape.
Former SEC Official Calls Crypto a ‘Scourge’
The 60 Minutes episode also included commentary from John Reed Stark, a former SEC official and outspoken critic of the crypto industry. Stark described cryptocurrencies as a “scourge,” criticizing their speculative nature and lack of tangible financial statements or balance sheets.

Stark asserted that cryptocurrencies should be classified as securities. He stated, “Judges have repeatedly ruled that these assets fall under securities laws.”
Ripple CEO Pushes Back on Criticism of XRP
Garlinghouse disagreed with Stark’s claims, maintaining that current securities laws are inappropriate for blockchain-based innovations like XRP. The Ripple CEO noted that crucial aspects of his argument, particularly about XRP not being classified as a security, were omitted from the broadcast.

Garlinghouse responded strongly to Stark’s comments, labelling him a “shill” for SEC Chair Gary Gensler.
Market Impact on XRP After the Interview
Following the broadcast, the price of XRP declined nearly 3% within 24 hours. This drop comes shortly after XRP reached a multi-year high of $2.82 earlier this month.
Ripple and XRP at the Forefront of Crypto Regulation Debate
The interview underscores the ongoing tension between the cryptocurrency sector and regulators. Ripple’s leadership continues to advocate for regulations that align with the unique characteristics of digital assets while pushing back against criticism of their flagship token, XRP.
As the crypto industry navigates these challenges, Ripple and XRP remain central to discussions about the future of cryptocurrency regulation in the United States.
