Billy Markus, one of the founders of the original meme cryptocurrency DOGE, took to social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, to share a significant piece of DOGE’s history. Known as “Shibetoshi Nakamoto” in online circles, Markus referenced a message he posted on the Bitcoin Forum in December 2013.
In his tweet, Markus jokingly referred to DOGE as an indicator of “how retarded people are getting,” adding a “ROFL” emoji for emphasis. The tweet showed a screenshot of a message from the Bitcoin Forum dated December 8, 2013, where a user confirmed that DOGE was intentionally designed to be “retarded.”
Dogecoin Witnesses Overnight Surge of 18%
Over the past 24 hours, Dogecoin, the leading meme cryptocurrency by market capitalization, experienced a remarkable surge of 22.76%, peaking at $0.1501. However, it has since slightly retraced to $0.1456, marking a 3.21% decline. Notably, Dogecoin has seen an impressive increase of 73.28% since the beginning of the week.

The recent surge in Dogecoin’s price largely results from the recent momentum in the broader cryptocurrency market, particularly driven by Bitcoin. Bitcoin, the flagship cryptocurrency, has surged by 21.74% since the start of the week, briefly surpassing the $64,000 mark before retracing to $61,990 at the time of this writing.

Growing excitement and institutional interest in spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) fueled the rally in Bitcoin. Following years of lobbying efforts, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) finally granted approval for spot Bitcoin ETFs on January 11. Grayscale, among other hedge funds, had advocated vigorously for this approval. Notably, BlackRock, the largest spot-based Bitcoin ETF, currently holds an impressive $10 billion worth of Bitcoin, a milestone achieved in the past week, surpassing other ETFs by a considerable margin.
Transitioning and Integrating Information
Moreover, the surge in Dogecoin’s price downplays the growing popularity of cryptocurrencies as speculative assets. Market participants have increasingly embraced meme coins like DOGE, drawn by their irreverent origins and potential for quick gains.
However, it’s important to note the inherent volatility of cryptocurrency markets. Fluctuation of prices wildly within short periods, driven by a myriad of factors including market sentiment, investor speculation, and broader macroeconomic trends.
