Jason Citron, the founder and CEO of popular community messaging app Discord, hinted at possible integration with the Ethereum ecosystem, NFT, and the upcoming Web3 earlier this week, but was faced with a heavy backlash.
Discord Users Not in Support of Ethereum Integration Plan
According to his post on Twitter on November 9, Discord founder and CEO Jason Citron tweeted “probably nothing,” including a screenshot of the app’s user settings page, which features an ETH logo and the option to connect to digital wallets like MetaMask and Wallet Connect
Subsequently, Citron received thousands of bombarding comments urging them to abandon the plan and threatening users to cancel their Nitro subscription. Crypto sceptics claim that NFTs are a Ponzi scheme and cause harm to the environment due to the energy consumption used to mine cryptocurrencies.
A Twitter user commented that he asked the app not to participate in the NFT scenario. He wanted an app that doesn’t allow money laundering programs that have been shown to cause climate change. He also noted that as a user of the product, He doesn’t necessarily want to harm the environment, that’s very important to him.
Although Citron commented that the feature was in “pre-release” mode, he stated on November 11th that it had gone into “unreleased” mode
In his statement:
“Thanks for all the perspectives everyone. We have no current plans to ship this internal concept. For now, we’re focused on protecting users from spam, scams and fraud. Web3 has lots of good but also lots of problems we need to work through at our scale. More soon.”
Although Discord is a widely used application in the crypto community, the NFT project in particular is using the platform to build communities. The gaming teams (and others) who use the platform don’t seem to be that interested in crypto.
Battles Between NFT Supporters and Critics
A November 9 Reddit post on the r / discord app community titled “Please don’t support NFT” received approximately 6,400 votes.
User “CaboSanLukas” stated that NFT technology was a “scam” and added that, imagine you bought a ticket with an X picture on it. However, this ticket has no legal effect in any country. In addition, NFT’s value is based on sheer speculation and scarcity.
While “Atulin” claims that they are burning an acre of Amazon forest to get a link to a receipt for buying something. They don’t get the thing, they don’t even get the receipt, they only get the link to the receipt.”
Hayden Adams, the founder of the decentralized exchange Uniswap, said today on Twitter that the response to Citron has been “very surreal,” but it serves as a good reminder of how early the world of Web3 is.
He also noted that PoS + L2s will completely solve the environmental problems in the next few years, but misunderstandings and fears will linger longer.
